True Moringa x PiperWai

This year has been the year of change and growth for us here at PiperWai. We started with just our Activated Charcoal Natural Deodorant Cream and now have expanded our line to include an array of personal care products. We are thrilled and ready to share with you all the exciting project that we plan to release in 2021. We want to introduce you to an amazing company that we are thrilled to work with this year.

Tell us more about True Moringa- when did you discover the oil and why you chose this oil to be the staple for the company.

My co-founder Kwami and I first learned about moringa while working in rural Ghana. Here, we met farmers who had been told by Peace Corps and NGOs to plant moringa for the nutritional benefits. Gram for gram, the leaves of the tree contain more iron than spinach, more protein than yogurt, and more calcium than milk. But farmers couldn’t afford to continue growing moringa because they didn’t have a way to make money from it. So, we took the unused part of the tree - the seeds - back to our labs at MIT and built the technologies to cold-press it into a deeply moisturizing oil.

What are the benefits of moringa oil?

Moringa is lightweight, easily absorbed, and compliments the oil your skin produces naturally so it won't clog pores or leave a greasy after-feel. It helps to bring skin back into balance regardless of your skin type. Moringa is extremely versatile - it can be used as a daily facial moisturizer, a hair conditioner, cuticle oil, makeup remover, and more!

How does your company maintain a sustainable lifestyle?

Moringa thrives in arid desert climates with very little water, absorbs carbon 20x more quickly than general vegetation, and grows so quickly - producing leaves in about two months and seeds in about eight months. Every single part of the tree can be used - the leaves for nutrition, the seeds for moisturizing oil, the seed shells for organic fertilizer, and the waste product of oil processing called "pressmeal" can even be used in water purification. Because it's such a versatile moisturizer, using moringa can help you simplify your routine and cut down on the number of products you need to use to give your skin a healthy natural glow.

What is next for True Moringa?

We're thrilled to have launched in Pharmaca nationwide as well as select Whole Foods around New England this year, and we introduced our new 3 Step Skincare Routine, including our Magic Black Soap Facial Cleanser and Moringa Mist. We spent much of the past year growing our outreach to new farmers, and next year we're excited to go deeper with these farmers, expanding their opportunities to break the cycle of poverty using moringa.
